Recognise a stroke — act BE-FAST

Could you spot a stroke in time?

Knowing the BE-FAST signs could save your life — or someone you love. Every minute without treatment costs around 1.9 million brain cells. Acting in the first 3 hours can mean the difference between full recovery and permanent disability.

Understanding stroke

What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, depriving brain cells of oxygen. Brain tissue can be damaged within minutes — knowing the type and acting fast is the difference between recovery and permanent disability.

Ischemic Stroke

A blood clot blocks an artery supplying the brain — the most common type, accounting for around 85% of all strokes.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

A blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding into or around brain tissue — often linked to uncontrolled high blood pressure.

TIA (Mini-Stroke)

A temporary blockage with symptoms that resolve within 24 hours — a serious warning sign that a major stroke may follow soon.

Why minutes matter

What waiting actually costs

Stroke treatment isn't measured in hours — it's measured in minutes and treatment windows. At our hospital, every step of the stroke pathway happens in one place — no transfer delays between hospitals.

Diagnostic imaging — on-site, 24/7
Time-sensitive stroke diagnosis requires fast access to advanced imaging. We offer:
  • Non-contrast CT — first-line stroke imaging, available 24/7
  • CT angiography (CTA) — identifies blocked vessels eligible for thrombectomy
  • MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging — for cases requiring more detailed assessment
  • CT perfusion — identifies salvageable brain tissue in the extended treatment window
Intravenous thrombolysis (tPA / alteplase)
For eligible patients arriving within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, IV thrombolysis dissolves the clot blocking blood flow to the brain. Earlier treatment means better recovery — our stroke pathway is designed to minimise time from arrival to medication, with an internal Door-to-Needle target of under 45 minutes.
Mechanical thrombectomy
For large-vessel strokes, mechanical thrombectomy physically removes the clot using a catheter inserted through the groin and guided to the brain. We offer this treatment 24/7 — a capability available at only a few centers in Bali. The standard treatment window is up to 6 hours; in selected cases identified by advanced imaging, the window can extend to 24 hours.
Neuro-ICU and continuous monitoring
After acute treatment, stroke patients require close monitoring for complications. Our dedicated neuro-intensive care unit provides 24/7 specialist monitoring during the critical first days, with one-on-one nursing for the most acute cases.
Stroke rehabilitation
Recovery doesn't end at discharge. We coordinate physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language therapy as part of an integrated rehabilitation plan tailored to each patient — beginning within 24 hours of stabilisation, where safe.

Stories from patients and families

The strength of a stroke center is measured in the lives it changes. Real stories from patients and families we have cared for.

"
When my dad had his stroke, we were completely panicking. But the team took control from the second they arrived. They didn't just treat him but they kept checking in on our family, explaining every test and next step so we never felt lost in the middle of it all.
— Maya S
"
Learning to use my left arm again felt impossible at first. My physio team didn't just hand me a generic checklist, they built my exercises around things that actually mattered to me.
— Hendra S
"
Having a stroke thousands of miles from home is a total nightmare. But the international team in Bali handled everything from translating medical updates to helping us coordinate with our insurance back home. Honestly don't know what we would have done without them.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions we hear from patients and families considering Bali International Hospital for stroke care.

How fast can our team treat a stroke?
Our stroke team targets a Door-to-Needle time under 45 minutes for ischemic stroke (tPA) and Door-to-Puncture under 90 minutes for thrombectomy — aligned with international benchmarks. On-site CT and MRI mean no transfer delays. The faster treatment starts, the more brain tissue we can save.
What should I do if I think someone is having a stroke?
Call 150 919 immediately and do not wait. Note the exact time symptoms started — this directly affects which treatments we can offer. Use BE-FAST (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time) to recognise the signs. Do not drive the patient yourself if an ambulance is available; the ambulance team can begin care en route and alert our stroke team before arrival.
Does Bali International Hospital accept international insurance?
Yes. Bali International Hospital works with major international insurance providers and offers direct billing for many policies. Please contact our admissions team via WhatsApp (+62 812-1166-1127) to confirm coverage for your specific provider before admission, where possible.
How much does stroke treatment cost?
Cost varies based on the type of stroke, treatment required, and length of stay. Acute stroke care is covered under BPJS and most major Indonesian and international insurance providers. For specific cost questions, package pricing, or insurance verification, contact our patient services team via WhatsApp or call our main line at 1500 238.
What languages do you support?
Our medical and patient services teams support Bahasa Indonesia and English. [Add other supported languages — e.g. Mandarin, Japanese, Russian — if available]
How soon after a stroke does rehabilitation start?
Early rehabilitation begins within 24 hours of stabilisation. International evidence shows that starting physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy as early as possible — safely — meaningfully improves long-term recovery outcomes. Our dedicated rehab team works alongside your neurologist from day one.
Can I get a second opinion for a stroke that happened elsewhere?
Yes. Many patients come to us for a specialist second opinion after initial care — whether to review imaging, treatment decisions, or build a recurrence-prevention plan. Bring any prior scans, discharge summaries, and current medications. Book a consultation via WhatsApp or call our team.
Where is the Stroke & Brain Center located?
Bali International Hospital is located in Sanur, Bali — approximately 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The Stroke & Brain Center is part of our main hospital campus, with 24/7 emergency access and dedicated neuro-care facilities under one roof.
